bad news bears...

since it is now past 4pm/cst, i think i can safely talk about this publicly. if not, oh well, hopefully no one at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid is reading my blog.

today started out pretty mundane. i woke up at 6am as usual, got ready for work, got in the truck, drove to work without event, and pretty much started my day as usual. this was all going well until around 10am. for those of you that do not know or understand what i do... i process over payments for Medicare. in 2000 (i think) the government decided that all government contractors would have to start bidding for contracts every 5 years to make sure that our tax dollars are getting the most bang for their buck... i think this is a pretty good idea and was pretty confident that the government (despite its shortfalls) could make a decision pretty well based on performance and price. i thought this until today at 1:30pm.

we have been waiting to hear about 3 contracts this year. the first, we lost. we knew and got over it because we still had two contracts being bid and we were SURE that we would get at least one of them. today we got the news that we did get awarded either contract. this means a few things, and i must say first and foremost- no decisions on the the company's further actions have been made, our company can protest this decison (and either win a contract or not) or we can choose (depending on the reasoning for not being awarded a contract initially) not to protest this. worst case scenario: in 6 months to a year, a lot of people in my company will not have jobs, quite possibly me included. or, best case: we protest (which could take up to 18 months) and win a contract and then it is business as usual.

i knew that we would have to bid for contracts coming into this job, but it is still nerve racking. i am young, but i have never had to worry about whether i would have a job... i haven't ever had to wonder if my job would be there. it seems petty b/c i know this is what a lot of americans are going through. i just needed to vent. thanks for listening
